Very cool concept, neat premises and interesting tour! We went for the $15 extended tour and somehow were the only ones (maybe cruise tours are too big or too cheap?) Our guide took us back to see the egg harvesting and fertilization, the nursery, and explained the whole process. The hatchery is having an amazing positive impact on the commercial fishing industry, and they're able to sell enough by-products to fund the whole operation. Amazing!! I love to fish and hatcheries are interesting but, If you've seen one hatchery, you've most likely seen them all, no matter the size of the facility. However, that said, their aquarium display of local species was pretty cool. Seeing a harbor seal munching on salmon near the fish ladder was pretty cool as well. Basically, a filler and time killer on the Juneau City Tour because, lets face it, there really isn't a lot to see in Juneau on a bus tour. If there is something else to do that may interest you, then skipping the hatchery is no big loss. A must visit in Juneau! It is so cool to learn about how the hatchery works and what it does for the local community. The aqaurium and touch tanks inside are really neat. Very clean facility and friendly and knowledgeable staff. The tour is very cheap and there is a nice gift shop inside. Fascinating look at the salmon hatchery process. Salmon were running home up the ladder when I was there and it was a spectacular experience. Definitely an A+ visit in Juneau. You probably only need about 30-45 minutes here, though. Good for a quick stop en route to glacier. Cool tanks with billions of baby fish and some bigger ones.
