The caves are one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. Do be extremely cautious if you venture out there. The caves have melted, collapsed, and reformed numerous times over the years and are constantly moving and changing with the glacier! The trail is easy to lose when it cuts across the bedrock section and has some scrambling and stream crossings. So GPS mark your route in order to find your way back or go across the lake by boat (No moter boats allowed). Liquid Alaska Tours and Alaska Above and Beyond run canoe tours with experienced guides and they provide all the gear needed like crampons, waterproof boots and helmets! Once you reach the glacier edge there is extreme danger for rocks slides coming off the west hillside, so be careful as you hike towards the caves which form when the streams at the left flank run into the glacier, melting out tunnels. I would recommended taking full rain gear including boots, extra layers, gloves, helmets, crampons, handwarmers, extra socks, warm hat, more food and water than you think you'll need and friends! Dont go alone. Also be aware that the temperature consistently drops as you get closer to the glacier. And do not enter caves if they look unstable. Enjoy, and make sure you take lots of pictures, these glaciers won't be around for long! (Winter Time, Crossing On The Ice) The Ice Caves are amazing! The walk was perfect! (Minus the 4 year old I brought) If you intend to bring small children, I fully recommend a sled for the ice treck. Worth the effort to get to but conditions, trails and landscape changes often so use good judgement Didn't quite make it to the caves, as I was walking on the frozen lake and my hiking partner got cold. Beautiful views, both of the glacier and the waterfall. Unbelievable. You will never see this color of blue unless you're standing right there. Worth the hike for sure
