Whenever I've been in need of obscure computer hardware, Hy Tech came through for me. The owner is...eccentric, and the store is packed - walking room only from shelf to shelf, but I suspect they're doing the best they can with the space they have. Although, sometimes their hoard works against them. They have a monitor I want to buy - and he wants to sell it, but it's buried so deeply that they simply can't get to it during normal business hours. The owner has said he'll dig it up and has taken my number 3 times as I've gone in to check with him, but after 6 months, it still hasn't happened. I think I, and subsequently he, would've been better off if he didn't offer the monitor to me to begin with. My wife and I were walking past the store during lunch today and noticed a small bird trapped against the front window. We went inside to kindly let him know that there was a bird trapped near the window. The owner replied, in a smart ass kind of way, that he "doesn't have a bird trapped and that the bird willingly came in and is about to leave." Then he goes on to tell us that "Juneau has an assortment of birds that fly at low levels and that his happens to all businesses downtown." To me a "thank you, I'll take care of it" would have sufficed. Other than that, good luck getting around in the store. There is so much clutter and nothing is organized. Most of the electronics in the store are obsolete...nothing really "Hi Tech" about anything in there. I suppose if you are looking for "old tech" it would be a good spot, but then you'd have to deal with the rude owner. In short...I would stay away from this joke of a "Hi Tech" place. there are a lot of new stuff and unexpensive price A packed room with any thing computer! Jim, the owner and "customer service" person at Hi-Tech Systems in Juneau, Alaska is by far and away the rudest and most contemptuous person I have ever had the displeasure of talking to over the phone. I called his shop looking to order a difficult to find computer component. He cut me off mid-sentence several times as I was trying to describe what I needed, he was patronizing, impatient, snide, and bordered on hostile at times. After we arranged the order of said part, he called my work phone with a question and got my answering machine. Instead of leaving a message, which he later insisted people never check, he rerouted himself to several of my co-workers looking for me, managing to harass each one in turn and hang up on them, leaving an overall impression at the office that he is a crazy person. Whether or not he is off his rocker, he is definitely a nasty person who will never receive business from this office.
