A great find. This place truly is the ultimate of a laid back country town. The sawdust on the floor the moment you enter (something that would never be allowed in Australia) made me giggle with glee and the atmosphere really brought a smile to my face. The beer selection of local brews was welcomed and the live music made me happy. I'm very glad we stepped inside + there is a gift shop once you're done. Perfect. Millie and I had a great time at the Red Dog. Lunch was excellent and the Alaska Beer assortment was perfect. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I expected a touristy experience but was very pleasantly surprised. This Juneau "landmark" was recommended by my travel agent prior to our Alaskan cruise. After reading several reviews I was reluctant to even step foot in it. Yet like a moth drawn to the flame I found myself unable to resist it. A sort of attraction one has to mark off on their bucket list regardless of how cheesy it might be. Their claim to fame is a gun left by the legendary gambler and gunfighter Wyatt Earp. And this being the oldest saloon in Alaska, it's supposed to be a genuine holdover from the states’ gold rush days. Given all that, there are times when you just go with the flow and make an obligatory visit. There is no doubt, once you step inside, that it's a tourist trap with "authentic" sawdust on the floor and gruff entertainer at the piano relaying bawdy humour. The line-ups to gain admittance can be long at times. It took us two attempts and we finally strolled in with no intention of ordering any of the run of the mill, overpriced bar food. After spending a few minutes, we were told that the only way out is through the gift shop. We seem to have spent more time in their gift shop than the actual saloon itself. A veritable treasure trove of all Red Dog paraphernalia it’s reminiscent of a Disneyland store. So visit if you must with your eyes wide open and keenly aware of the hype. We stopped in twice while in town. Both times had great, knowledgeable bartenders. Had a nice choice of bourbons for the whiskey flight we chose. Learned a bit of local history, and enjoyed the ambiance. So much fun!! Even though we were here during the day, it was still really neat and busy. Food is good. I love the atmosphere, all the fun stuff hanging up, the wall full of business cards, and the saw dust on the floor. Cool place.
