This short and easy hiking trail runs along Gold Creek atop a historic wooden flume installed in the 1890s and still in operation today (see pictures). The Flume Trail is made of wooden boards that can be slippery when wet. This flume is part of Juneau's first hydroelectric power plant and is heavily forested with alder, spruce, hemlock, cottonwood, and willow trees. Here you can enjoy views of birds, red squirrels, porcupines, and the occasional bear, as well as Gold Creek, the canyon, and waterfalls. For a longer hike you can start the Flume Trail at the Basin Road trailhead, hike through the Highlands neighborhood and end at Cope Park where you can access Gold Creek beach, picnic tables and unisex restrooms. An awesome, easy trail along the gold-panning flume.
