What an experience! We started the day hoping to see at least one North American Humpback, but left having seen at least a dozen + a new found knowledge on photography and so forth. Bryan (our guide) was exceptional in every way. His passion and knowledge on all things wildlife and photography only made me listen harder, which allowed me take more on board. Seeing the majestic creatures in their own habitat was a dream come true and one my husband and I are so glad we did. Everything about Gastineau Guiding (we did the Whales & Glaciers Photo Safari tour) was performed on such a professional level that I can't help but recommend them as highly as possible. Thanks Bryan for making a part of our Alaska adventure unforgettable. We had an awesome time with Andy and Capt. Jen! The photography safari is a unique perspective to whale watching and glacier viewing that made this experience extra special. Andy and Jen were knowledgeable, fun, and great with kids. The trip had a great balance of learning new skills about photography that were helpful for the most beginner to the most advanced photographers and learning about the area and animals that we were seeing. Andy was fantastic at making time to talk with everyone. My kids loved the experience and I think what made this experience a "once in a lifetime" one was spending the time with these great guides. We went out with Kim R and Captain Fred. Kim exuded knowledge and enthusiasm and Cap Fred knew exactly where to go and handled his craft, the Zephyr, expertly. It's a nice, smaller, fast boat. And then we saw Flame (along with several other humpbacks) - she kept her modesty and didn't show us tail, but holy moly, what an experience. Highly recommended. I can't say enough good things about this experience! Our glacier/whale watching tour was arranged through our cruise, and I was thoroughly impressed with Gastineau. Derek, our guide, was knowledgeable and extremely helpful, both for those with little photography experience and for those with lots, like myself. Susannah was our captain when we got to the ship, and the two of them worked seamlessly together to find not only active whales, but to position the boat optimally to capture the best pictures. The fact that the company has a fleet of small ships also added to the experience. The captains communicated and coordinated efficiently to locate and follow active whales. We chose this tour specifically for the small boats, and I found them even better than expected as they opened for the maximum amount of unobstructed shooting angles. I got some exceptional photos, and a lot of this is thanks to Derek and Susannah, and their work with this company. If you want good pictures and not just whale sightings, I highly recommend you seek out Gastineau Guiding! This was an excellent small-group adventure that allowed us to take some of the best photos of our Alaska cruise. The crew was friendly and knowledgeable, and we succeeded in finding whales right away. Highly recommend this trip and Gastineau for all ages.
